Following the film we will discuss the implications of an ever growing consumer society and what the alternatives are. DON'T MISS THIS MEETING! It is guaranteed to be an entertaining and informative way of spending a Tuesday evening. ELECTION RESULTS Wednesday 04 June 2008 - 11:57:59 TIM PRINCE WINS! The Riverside Press Enterprise reports that as of 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, Tim Prince has won the race for the Democratic Party candidate for Congress from the 41st Congressional District, beating out the other three contenders by a hefty margin. With 100 % of princincts reporting, these are the numbers:
Many of us in the BBV Democratic Club worked long and hard for Pat Meagher and feel saddened that he did not win the primary election. As we reported earlier on this website, the Club voted overwhelmingly to endorse Mr. Meagher. He's a fine man--honest as the day is long, passionate about helping others, dedicated to the causes we hold dear. He's got a great future ahead of him if he still has the will and the energy to keep on making a huge difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Pat, for being who you are! And Rita Ramirez-Dean also holds a special place in our hearts. Like Pat she has come to Big Bear several times to speak to the community about local and national issues during this campaign and also two years ago when she ran for the California State Assembly. We also appreciate her efforts to make a difference in our lives. In another local election many people in the Big Bear Valley will be happy to see that Neil Derry beat out Dennis Hansberger for San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. Here are the results as reported in the Press Enterprise at 7:01 a.m. Votes Percentage Neil Derry 18,222 52.37 % Dennis Hansberger 16,574 47.63 % GET OUT THE VOTE! Monday 02 June 2008 - 16:41:12 DEMOCRATS GO VOTE! California Primary Election Day, June 3rd, 2008 Over the lo ast two months before the deadline, more people in San Bernardino County registered to vote on the Democratic Party ballot than ever before, virtually closing the historic wide gap that had existed between the two major parties for a long time. The County now is virtually a blue county, making history in the annals of California politics. Now it's time for all registered Democrats to get out and exercise their precious right to vote in the Primary Election. Go do it! It only takes a minute. The polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3 and stay open until 8 p.m. The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club made these endorsements at its last meeting and urge you to vote for these candidates: Mr. Pat Meagher, for Congress from the CA 41st Congressional District Mr. Carl Wood, for the California 65th Assembly District. The Club strongly urges a "No" vote on Proposition 98 and a "Yes" vote on Proposition 99. So, get out the vote. It's soooooo important that our voices be heard! Dan Fowlks Speaks at the Club Meeting in May Monday 28 April 2008 - 21:12:01 DEMOCRATIC CLUB HOSTS DAN FOWLKS AT ITS MAY MEETING Like most places in Southern California Big Bear Valley is facing a looming water crisis. A burgeoning population is quietly but persistently making demands for cleaner, pure water in homes and businesses. The community discussion over recycled wastewater as another source for potable water won’t go away. Mr .Dan Fowlks, a part time resident of Big Bear and a well-informed spokesman about treated waste water, gave a slide presentation titled, “Recycled Wastewater: Risks, Hazards and Alternatives”, illustrating the results of his extensive research concerning emerging contaminants as related to artificial recharging of wastewater. The danger we are facing comes from trace amounts of pharmaceuticals for which no effective filter has been produced. When some drugs come into contact with each other, they can combine their molecules to produce yet another new, unidentified drug whose deliterious effects on the ecology are not known. To date these chemicals are unregulated and therefore wastewater treatment facilities are not legally bound to remove these contaminants from the effluent. While the effect on humans has not been fully studied, there have been many studies that have linked phamaceutical products in lakes containing estrogen to high rates of abnormalities in fish that live in the waters, such as cross gendering where male fish have morphed into females. Could this be one explanation for the gender inbalance in the human population? The bottom line is that we must proceed with extreme caution, give the scientific community the time to develop the filtering technologies to remove all traces of risky drugs from wastewater, let the regulatory process develop, and find alternative sources of drinking water. Thanks, Dan, for a fine presentation. It was a real service to the Big Bear Community. In the business meeting that followed the program, members of the club voted to endorse Pat Meagher for Congress, and Carl Wood for State Assembly. Each candidate received more than the required 70% vote to receive the endorsement. Senator Barack Obama also won the club's endorsement but did not receive the 70% majority vote. Sandi and Bob Ybarra, and Deborah Smith are hosting a "Meet Pat Meagher" event in Sugarloaf Park on Saturday, May 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. This will be another opportunity for the Big Bear Community to meet the candidate, ask him questions, and hear him speak on many issues facing the Valley and the country. The Real John McCain Sunday 06 April 2008 - 02:09:38 Here are 10 things you should know about John McCain:
John McCain is not who the Washington press corps make him out to be. Please help get the word out! April Town Hall Meeting Friday 14 March 2008 - 02:38:08 The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club Held a Town Hall Meeting for the Democratic Candidates Running for Congress in the 41st Congressional District Pat Meagher from Forest Falls, Tim Prince from San Bernardino, and Rita Ramirez-Dean from 29 Palms captivated the audience's attention for over two hours as they fielded questions from a panel of journalists and politicians as well as from the audience. They discussed issues at the national and local levels. All agree the U.S. led invasion of Iraq was a tragic mistake that has cost the lives of over 4000 young Americans with tens of thousands wounded, some maimed for life, and well over a trillion dollars already drained from the nation's financial resources. Each candidate supports aplan to begin immediate withdrawal while doing whatever necessary to prevent more shedding of blood. Pat Meagher said "we support our troops, but it's the wrong mission." On pork barrel spending, all support reducing ear marked legislation that benefits only a select few or those designed to enhance the reputation of the congressman involved. Mr. Prince and Mr. Meagher place global warming as the number one challenge to resolve while Rita Ramirez-Dean places it right behind education which she believes is the first priority that takes precedence over all the others. All three candidates are fully committed to securing a victory over the incumbent, Jerrry Lewis, in the Genral Election in November. But first one of them must emerge triumphant in the June Primary Election. March Meeting Thursday 28 February 2008 - 13:21:00 MARCH MADNESS IS UPON US The month of March always brings with it the official end of winter, the beginning of spring, the exciting culmination of the NCAA basketball season, and probably this year for the first time in recent memory, the end of the primary races for the White House. John McCain all but has the Republican Party normination in the bag, and for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the remaining primary elections scheduled for March and early April will undoubtedly determine the winner of the Democratic Party nomination. The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club meeting in March falls on the same day, Tuesday, March 4, as the Primary Election in two crucial states, Ohio and Texas, where the popular vote and the delegate count could very well push Barack Obama toward an insummountable lead. At the club meeting on Tuesday, we will present the case for Barack Obama for President, as well as hear talking points for candidates for other offices, such as Pat Meagher for Congress in the California 41st Congressional District. That's Tuesday, March 4th, at 6:30 in the BBARWA Meeting Hall, where politics are as lively and relevant as they are in Ohio and Texas. February Meeting Saturday 09 February 2008 - 13:38:54 DEMOCRATS HELD GENERAL MONTHLY MEETING ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 IN THE BBARWA MEETING HALL At the February meeting of the Democratic Club of Big Bear Valley, many important topics dear to the heart of most residents of the Valley were presented, first by councilman Michael Karp--current and future demand for safe, clean water, community efforts to address the threat posed by climate change, projections for population growth in the community. Tim Prince, one of three Democrats running for Congress from the California 41st District, gave a brief introduction and promised to come back to take part in a Town Meeting the Club will conduct in lieu of its April meeting. The format for the April Town Hall Meeting will be a debate between the three candidates--Pat Meagher, Tim Prince, and Dr. Rita Ramirez-Dean. And other topics came up for consideration--The Bear Valley Lighthouse Project and Move a Million MIles for Ryan Hall--community-wide efforts to promote and support young people in our community, Carolyn Robinson's success in putting together a lending library of books of interest to Democrats, Jo Ann Mark's new membership campaign, Deborah Smith's upcoming Open House for Pat Meagher. On the national level, President David Foltz made the case for writing letters to House Judiciary Committee Chairman, John Conyers, to urge him to begin the proceedings for the impeachment of Richard Chaney. The evening's program featured a video presentation of a recent debate held in Los Angeles between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, followed by a discussion of their respective positions on a number of issues--Health Care, the Iraq War, and the likelihood that either one or the other will win in the National Election in November. A straw vote taken among the members at the January meeting shows that the membership strongly favors Barack Obama for President. Whichever candidate emerges as the party's nominee, it is certain that the Club will muster up all the support it can garner from our community to ensure a victory for the Democratic Party nominee! This election year, 2008, will undoubtedly go down in the history books as the most important in decades. This is the year when Americans will bring about a radical regime change in the White House ending a disastrous, tragic eight years of a misguided, incompetent, and inept Bush Administration. This will be the year when a new Democratic Administration will begin to repair the damage done to the Republic, restore a balance of power in the Federal Government, begin an organized withdrawal of our military forces from Iraq, earn again the respect and support of other countries, reestablish lost civil rights--right to privacy, habeas corpus, respect for religious choice--and take necessary and immediate steps to address the threats to Planet Earth. The fate of this country and the world is at stake. Nothing could be more important than this--that Democrats win in November, in the White House, in Congress, in statehouses and legislatures, in county board of supervisor and city council elections across the country. Although the Club membership remains strong, we desperately need your help in the days and weeks ahead to aid in achieving these causes. If you are a registered Democrat who lives in or near the Big Bear Valley and you are committed to these goals, please consider becoming a member or renewing your membersip in the Club. Membership entitles you to vote on all business issues, including endorsements and resolutions. Come to our meeting and pick up an application. Hope to see you at the March and April meetings, and for the rest of the year. DAF DFA Grassroots All-Star Vote 2008 ! Tuesday 15 January 2008 - 03:50:40 BE COOL !Support 41st Congressional District DEMOCRATS Vote June 3, 2008 California Primary Election With all the media attention on the presidential primaries, it would be easy to think they are the only elections in 2008. That's why for the next three weeks, while the pundits go crazy talking about polling data that's probably wrong, we're going to focus on the 2008 races that will deliver a progressive Congress. Nominate your favorite congressional candidates for the DFA 2008 Grassroots All-Star endorsement right now: www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/AllStarVote DFA endorsements have always been driven by our members. You're the boots on the ground making a difference in your community. When you tell us who you support and why, we listen. Over 80 congressional candidates have applied for your endorsement. And starting today, you can choose to nominate up to three of those candidates for one of the most coveted endorsements of the year. Your 2006 Grassroots All-Star, Jerry McNerney, went on to beat a 14-year incumbent Republican in a district no one thought he could win. Here's what Congressman McNerney said after your support propelled him to victory in November 2006:"DFA's 2006 'Grassroots All-Star' online congressional competition provided us with the crucial early funding and buzz we needed to compete and win in November. This was a people-powered victory that you helped make possible by volunteering and contributing to our campaign for change." Choose our next Grassroots All-Star by nominating your candidates right now. The DFA Grassroots All-Star isn't your typical endorsement. The winner earns the financial support of our 675,000 nationwide membership, hundreds of volunteer hours by local members on the ground, and the media buzz generated by our national spotlight. Perhaps the biggest prize of all, the DFA Training Academy will train DFA members and campaign staff in the winner's district making sure everyone learns the skills to win. This isn't your typical contest either. Voting isn't a spectator sport, it takes action to win. You need to get out the vote for your candidate. After you vote today make sure you ask your co-workers, family, and friends to vote too. Think out of the box. You can write a post for your local blog or call into a national radio show. You can hand out flyers at a local political event or go door to door in your neighborhood. If you get five more people to vote for your candidate, you might be the supporter who puts your candidate over the top. Vote now, spread the word, and make victory happen.
